Two Android bad boys duke it out!
However, as we move through the year and more and more Android flagships come out, it’s become evident the Galaxy S7 has some stiff competition. HTC and LG both have strong flagships this year and the OnePlus 3 is apparently just around the corner. But there is a new player in town, one that has been slowly building up its presence in Western markets over the last few years — Huawei.

You might be thinking that it is not a serious issue. But think again… don’t we leave our phones on our desks thinking that since these devices are locked so no one could access them?. Now do you understand the gravity of the issue?
This year, the company has launched the new Galaxy A7 and A5 smartphones. Just to clear the air, the South Korean tech giant launched devices with the same names as last year. Samsung just chose to call them the 2016 editions of the smartphones.
HTC has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the HTC 10, which it hopes will rival the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S7 thanks to a new camera and the inclusion of high resolution audio features.
The HTC 10 - the successor to the firm's M9 that was released in 2015 - had been heavily rumoured online for some time, with the Taiwanese firm claiming it has been working on the phone "behind closed doors for 12 months".
The new device comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera that includes optical image stabilisation (OIS) technology designed to take better photos even when the hand holding it is shaking. It can also record video in 4K resolution.
These are similar specifications to one of its perceived rivals, the iPhone 6s Plus, which launched in September.
The HTC 10 also has a larger aperture in the lens on the front-facing camera, which HTC says lets in more light and will take better "selfies". The battery can also last for up to two days, the firm claims.
The HTC 10 arrives as the Taiwanese firm continues to struggle in the smartphone market - both its high profile launches last year, the M9 and A9, failed to sell as well as the company had hoped, leading to 15% staff cuts in August.
However, the firm's other ventures, most notably the HTC Vive headset, have been met with early acclaim and positive sales.
The HTC 10 also supports high-resolution audio, which is clearer than standard sound, and the new phone will come with a set of high resolution audio earphones in the box, while the phone will also be capable of up-scaling a user's existing songs into high resolution.
HTC says it has also worked with Google to "reboot" the Android operating system that runs on the device. The number of native apps has been reduced, while more have been integrated together to make the phone faster, creating what HTC is calling the "best of Google and HTC".

Apple’s release of the iPhone 7 could be delayed due to the recent earthquake in Japan, reports say.
According to Newsweek, the magnitude 5.8 quake that hit the Pacific nation “had a significant impact on local industry.” It reportedly forced major companies to close down their factories. These include Sony’s image sensor plant in Kumamoto, one of the hardest-hit regions, and a camera component plant in Nagasaki.
Sony is one of the suppliers of high-end camera sensors to many smartphone manufacturers including Apple. Last Sunday, however, Sony reopened the Nagasaki plant which was the principal production facility. In an interview with Reuters, an analyst said the closure of one plant has little effect on the American tech company. This means Apple fans can relax if they have began worrying about the new dual-lens feature of the iPhone 7.
“The impact of the Kumamoto plant suspension on Apple is expected to be limited,” Hiroyuki Shimizu, principal research analyst at Gartner, said.
Storage slump
Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 may not feature the coveted and top-tier smartphone memory to date. Recently, Samsung’s lightning quick universal flash storage came along with the release of the Galaxy S7. According to BGR, the new storage is based on Samsung’s advanced V-NAND flash memory chips. It can “offer better speeds than typical memory solutions used in smartphones and other computers.”
According to ET News, Samsung will still supply the innovative memory tech for Apple’s iPhone 7. But it was dropped from the current supply chain due to disagreements with manufacturing requests. Currently, Samsung is working with partners to create an EMI shielding for their chips, which could be ready for the iPhone next year.
BGR further clarifies that there are other memory providers looking to service Apple. SK Hynix is one of those and they are hoping to provide in the future the same EMI-protected NAND memory for the successors of the iPhone 7.

Samsung has started pushing out a minor update to its latest flagship smartphones - the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge - in India. Weighing in at 1.06MB, the update includes some bug-fixes as well as stability and performance-related improvements.
This update to the latest Galaxy phones follows the one that the South Korean company started pushing out earlier last week, bringing touch and stability-related improvements as well as shape correction for skewed photos and latest Android security patch.
Given that this new bug-fixing update has just started rolling out, it may take sometime before it hits your handset. Meanwhile, if you're feeling impatient, you can head to the Settings menu on your device to check for it manually.

Sprint has started rolling out Marshmallow update to Samsung Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy S5 Sport units on its network. The update brings Android version 6.0 to both devices.
The Note Edge update also includes latest Android security patches as well as some other bug fixes. The updates are being rolled out in phases, with the Note Edge process completing on May 2 and the S5 Sport process wrapping up on May 11.
In case you haven't received the update notification yet, you can also manually check for the update by heading to the Settings menu on your handset.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was released in April 2014 as the company’s first dust and waterproof smartphone in the series, boasting an IP67-certificate which would allow it to survive for roughly 30 minutes in up to 1 meter of water. Following its release, the smartphone has been tested under various conditions by consumers and reviewers, but as it turns out the ultimate test may have been unintentionally conducted by a 70-year-old Galaxy S5 owner from South Korea, whose smartphone survived outdoors for 7 months straight.
Earlier this week Samsung Electronics shared the story of Bae Gyu-ryong; a 70-year-old customer who lost his Galaxy S5 in September 2015. Reportedly, the owner works at a medical center in Chungju, and last year in September he lost his Samsung Galaxy S5 while working in a persimmon orchard near his farmhouse, 150 km southeast of Seoul. Unfortunately, the owner claims that the smartphone was in silent mode which made it that much more difficult to locate, and after several days of searching for the device, Bae gave up and decided to buy a new smartphone. The story picks up 7 months after the aforementioned events took place, when Bae Gyu-ryong found the Samsung Galaxy S5 while plowing the field at his farmhouse. He dried out the device, recharged it, and much to his surprise, the Samsung Galaxy S5 powered on after being exposed to snow, rain, and various temperatures and weather conditions for more than half a year. Bae Gyu-ryong revealed that the smartphone was fully functional, and that he was able to recover his lost data.
Although “the Galaxy S5 boasts excellent waterproof features” according to Bae Gyu-ryong, the same cannot be said for the Samsung Galaxy S6 released last year, which lacked dust and waterproofing. However, the latest Samsung Galaxy S7 has been IP68-certified, meaning that it should withstand the forces of nature just as well as its predecessor from two years ago, if not better. In any case, it’s worth noting that if you happen to keep your Android smartphone in silent mode more often than not, and if you’re fearful that you might misplace the terminal, Google’s Android Device Manager application can locate your device as long as the service has been enabled on your phone beforehand. The app also allows users to ring their devices even when they are in silent mode.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) have been officially announced in China in late March, and the duo was then released in the region with no official word on when the new series might hit the shelves in the Western hemisphere. However, earlier this month more evidence of a wider release emerged, and now the two smartphones have been pretty much confirmed to arrive in Europe in the foreseeable future. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) is already available for purchase in Spain through the official Samsung website, whereas the product page for the smaller Galaxy J5 (2016) went live on the manufacturer’s website in France, signaling what seems to be an imminent release.
Starting off with the slightly larger Samsung Galaxy J7 refresh, the terminal is now listed on the manufacturer’s webpage in Spain next to a price tag of €299. Spec-wise, the smartphone features a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, but oddly enough and unlike the Galaxy J7 (2016) announced in China – which features a Full HD display (1080 x 1920 pixels) -, the model aimed at the Spanish market seems to be equipped with a less impressive 1280 x 720 panel. Furthermore, while the model released in China boasts 3 GB of RAM, the European variant (or at least the one available in Spain) is equipped with 2 GB of RAM instead. Either way, the smartphone carries an octa-core processor clocked at up to 1.6 GHz (presumably the Qualcomm Snapdragon 617), and has 16 GB of on-board storage which can be expanded by up to an additional 128 GB via microSD. Last but not least, it features a 13-megapixel main camera with an f/1.9 aperture and 1080p video recording capabilities, a 5 MP front-facing sensor with the same aperture, a 3,300 mAh battery, and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

Currently, the update - which brings Marshmallow version 6.0.1 - is hitting units in SriLanka, with European and other SM-G900Fs likely to get it soon.

According to the report, Samsung is on a mission to step up its camera game even further and has an aggressive roadmap. The company is also working on a new compact 1/2.3" sensor, but its use isn't known yet.
Finally, Samsung's long-term game is to lure NX camera users to switch to its smartphones and part of the effort to do so will be a new interface based on the NX one in upcoming smartphones. Whether all these rumors are true or not remains to be seen and we'll be keeping an ear out for more rumors on the topic.
